"Don't Tell 'Em" by Jeremih featuring YG - Pop Song Review

Hot 100: 17
Pop Radio play: 17
Rhythmic Radio Play: 1

Let’s get something out of the way first. I hate this song a ton.  I loathe it when it comes on the radio.  Jeremih is untalented fool of a singer.  Now that I got that out of my system I feel a lot better. The question on everyone mind is why does it suck so badly? Let’s get it crushing this awful song and never listening to it again.

Jeremih came into existence in 2009 with the big hit “Birthday Sex” or the super clean version “Birthday Shh”. It wasn’t the best introduction to the Chicago “singer” but the uptempo version at least helps me to ignore the lyrics of the song. With “Birthday Shh” half of the song is missing because it is so dirty which was hilarious to me when it came on the radio. It didn’t make it any of the song better to me.    "Birthday Shh" is listed below.

For a long time I thought he would be a one hit wonder with that song but he came back with “Down on Me” in 2010 which was also a bad song.  That song was popularized by Keenan Cahill who somehow got famous for lip syncing songs. We have Britney Spears who does that for a living in concerts. Don’t ask how Britney Spears was able to make that slide through.

Somehow he was able to stick around in the r&b world and keep making hit records which amazes me to this day.  He is a worse Jason Derulo.  At least Jason Derulo can make decent party records and sound interesting sometimes.   I’ll give credit to Jason Derulo at least he created a trend with saxophones with “Talk Dirty”. Jeremih hasn’t created anything other than keeping auto tune viable options for r&b singers. Take a listen to his new single, “Don’t Tell ‘Em” below.

“Don’t Tell ‘Em” has production from DJ Mustard who also produces the earlier hip hop pop crossover hit from this year, “Show Me” by Kid Ink featuring Chris Brown. DJ Mustard has been a hot streak this year in hip hop producing some of the biggest hits on the format. One of the most annoying things hip hop producers seem to do is add an audio watermark to you know they made that beat.  Let the beat and music speak for itself instead of putting your crappy audio watermark on the song.  You don’t see Pharrell, Dr. Luke, Max Martin, Stargate, or Daft Punk doing that so stop doing it.

In terms of DJ Mustard production style it is the same beat with the identical eight bit synthesizer line with hand claps similar to “Show Me” . It is not bad necessarily just seems more like a trend chaser beat with classic “hey hey hey” chant guys in the background. Ironically the biggest song of the summer, “Fancy” by Iggy Azalea bit off his style and became a bigger hit than any of his original beat work.

How about Jeremih himself vocally? Terrible. He is auto tune to sound like a robot that ate a mattress full of helium.  He is loathsome in the song and very forgettable by the end.  I honestly can’t tell him apart from other r&b robot singers.
Daft Punk
Not those robots  I like those robots they make good music. I like to see him have a hit without auto tune in his voice which will never happen.

The chorus is a sample of Snap’s “Rhythm is a Dancer” which seems not needed.  It doesn’t seem to fit the song dark and dirty feel it was going for. It seems like he needed a recognizable sample for the song to sell. For me the main chorus is the repetition of “Don’t Tell ‘Em.”  In the chorus Jeremih asks the girl not to tell ‘em (the guy) she is with about having sex.  Jeremih is a massive scum bag taking advantage of the girl in this situation and the girl should be more faithful to the guy she is dating.  Isn’t he a great guy to date, Jeremih since he won’t be loyal? Look to Chris Brown as a role model.

The lyrics go on to describe how Jeremih is going to do it with girl in the song. There are a few really eye-catching lines after a few listens.

“I act a fool, Bobby Brown with it.”

In his line he talks about the lewd acts that Bobby Brown used to do in concerts. Not exactly the best role model for show business. It seems Jeremih has him as a respectable figure.

“I’ll give you that, girl; I’m talking laps as if you got a pool in it.”

Here he talks about girls intimate areas as pools and he’ll give her a workout.

“Girl, he fufu with it”

Fufu means fake. I had to look up what that meant, so I’m no rocket scientist when it comes to new hip hop slang either.

We have a new rap artist by the name of YG whom I have never heard of until this song.  When I saw his name I thought it was spell “Y6”? I thought he had some vendetta against the number 6.

Hold up a second.  I have heard of him before in the DJ Mustard audio watermark this whole time. All right YG you got the floor impress me with some good rhymes.

“Throw it up 9-3-4, 8-6-1-6”

I believe here he mentions a reference to the famous 867-5307/Jenny song by Tommy Tune. Not a bad start to the song. Maybe he’ll be a decent rapper by the end of this song since I already gave up on Jeremih earlier in the review. One more last interesting line of note from the rapper YG I hope he doesn’t ruin his chance.”

“I keep a stack of hundreds like a keep a secret.”

YG talks about he hides secrets like money in his pocket.  In case he ever got in trouble from where he grew up (Compton, California.) he could leave right away.  This line is meh to me. How many secrets are you keeping, YG? It sounds like you are keeping the rest of verse of a potential good verse to yourself.

He later on sticks to the typical topics of hip hop and as an added bonus a YOLO reference. Pretty sure YOLO died out two years ago but better late to the party then nonexistent was his thought process there.

I went searching for an actual music video for the song but he never made one. Instead I found this nice choreograph dance routine by dance group Hollywood. It is pretty good just make sure to mute the audio.

Overall what do I think of this song? It is terrible hip hop crossover song. There is a reason we keep that stuff to the urban radio station.  You wonder why Lorde hates this music and craps on it is BORING!

Final score: (1/5)

Instrumentation: A recycle DJ Mustard beat. Nothing ground breaking or earth shattering with this song production wise.

Lyrics:  Terrible.

Chorus: The “rhythm is a dancer” sample doesn’t seem to fit with me.  Compliment the girl and tell her let’s have sex but don’t tell. Seems like a very juvenile thought process.

Notability: Please be gone soon and forgotten.  (1-2) months left I hope it is around.
