Cartoon Clash 3: Musician Edition

Welcome to Cartoon Clash where I take two cartoon theme songs and analyze them. As usual I judge them on lyrics; memorize ability, catchiness, and notability. This time I’ll take a look at two musicians’ cartoon theme songs from Andre 3000 of Outkast and Gene Simmons of Kiss. Brownies are available (coupon at the end of the review)  if you know the shows without looking.  Don’t cheat!

Class of 3000: (2006-2008)

Class of 3000

Catchiness: The beat on this song is good. It has a funky hip hop beat typical of Andre 3000 production from Outkast.  The “ahh yeah” in the beginning tells you are in for something seriously epic from the show.

The full version of the song includes a jazz section is pretty unique.  I like the beat and production of the song.

Lyrics:  It sticks with the typical chorus catchiness of “la la la” and “ahh yeah.” Andre 3000 throws some “class of 3006” adlibs.  Madison singing “London Bridge is falling down” is the only downfall for the song. It is just annoying the way she sings it.  Here is a demonstration of what Madison does to song curiosity of Wile E. Coyote.

I listen to the whole song and as Lil D from the show says it best; “the beat is ferocious.” Each character on the show gets a moment to shine on the song. They throw some jabs at the music industry and lessons in life as song continues.

Memorize: Not much to it. “Class of 3006” “la la la” is recited over and over and the character Madison has those annoying lines about the London Bridge.  It made me remember that awful Fergie song too of the same name. Listening to the beat over and over again will make you want to do this task. I’d say it is pretty easy.

Notability:  This show is particularly memorable for many of the musical numbers that are in it. My personal favorite is “Throw Down” on the show. Go search for it when you get a chance.  Andre 3000 did a really a good job on this show when it came to music selection.

My dad the Rockstar: (2003-2004)

My Dad the Rockstar

Catchiness: One of the many crimes of the 2000s was the emo sounding theme song. This song isn’t any better than the other ones of the same genre.  For a show that has Gene Simmons producing it and is a character in the show; I was kind of hoping for an edgier theme song.  After a few painful listens it is really not catchy at all.  This guy singing is awful.

Lyrics: Typical “parents don’t understand me lyrics” and “my life is awful < insert reason here> excuse.”  I think having a dad as a rockstar would be cool, but apparently this kid doesn’t think so. On the contrary let's look at Will Smith song "Parents just don't understand." Will Smith was able to accomplish with interesting story and a diverse flow. My Dad the Rockstar on the other hand is just excuse after excuse of how his life is terrible when in reality it isn’t. The show did get it point across of what it is about, so I shouldn’t hate on it too much.

Memorize: Many song lyrics in this show, but highly doubt you want to impress your friends reciting this one back. I’d give it a hard difficulty, but do you really want to know these lyrics?

Notability: This show was only on two seasons based on Gene Simmons son experiences on tour. This would be more interesting as a book which he did release, but not as a kid show.  I swear most people don’t remember this show or even recognize the theme song.

Enough Musical Analysis: Who won the battle?

The scores are below and final score for both shows is:

Class of 3000: (4/5)
My Dad the Rockstar:  (2/5)

The decision was a landslide. I got no enjoyment out of My Dad the Rockstar theme song and in fact it got worse each time I heard it.
Truly awful, but I bet there is worse out there.
The songs above were pretty diverse musically. Class of 3000 had lyrics that while simple  stay in your head. The music in Class of 3000 is clearly a lot more exciting and less whiny than My Dad the Rockstar. I can tell Andre 3000’s music production crew had a lot more fun recording  their song than Gene Simmons did with some generic emo rock group he found on the street.  I think Gene Simmons had a ball and chain attach the rock group that had to record this crap.  Andre 3000 had the right idea for his show theme: high energy, short song, and easy to sing. While Madison part is annoying and subtracts from the score it didn’t kill overall vibe the song.  Here’s to hope that a new Outkast album comes soon.
Delicious Brownies... Yum!
