Coldplay as a band has never appeal to me. Maybe it is the vocals or the lyrics; they
just never seem to do anything for me. Every
time I say I am not a fan of them every one hates me for it. Like for
example.
Me: I don’t like Coldplay.
Friend: Why so?
Me: I’m found them boring
to listen too. They suffer from vague lyrics.
Friend: I can’t believe
you don’t like them. (Calls 911)
*A felony has been committed, suspect in pursuit.*
**Arrested for not liking Coldplay. **
Jail time: infinity times 5 years.
Just seems to be a fact nowadays. The band has talent don’t get me wrong and in
fact I have like a few of their songs before; they just never seem to part of my
musical collection. I don’t know if it
is Chris Martin voice or the melancholy vibe of their music, but I have never
been a fan of them.
Before I started writing this review I listened to
their tracks that experimented with electronic dance music to see what they did right
and wrong. Production wise they can
balance edm and rock very well to bring the two genres to new heights. The real
downfall is Chris Martin voice it never seems powerful enough to shine through
the production. I noticed this
especially on “Every Teardrop is a Waterfall.”
Production:
Coldplay’s “A Sky Full of Stars” is more
pop oriented than their other electronic like hits, but that is not necessarily
a bad thing. Production wise they
brought hit maker Avicii of “Levels, Wake Me Up!, and Hey Brother” fame to
bring this song to life. I am a fan of electronic dance music and I really enjoyed the production on this song. The piano playing in the beginning is nice
addition to pull off this mature sounding vibe the song
was going for. The synthesizers are well
time to the lyrics and the electronic dance music drop isn’t forced into the
song unlike “Starships” by Nicki Minaj. Production wise everything seems to fit
perfectly. Hats off to Avicii for the
nice production work on this track, well done.
Vocals:
Chris
Martin vocals shine through the production unlike before where it would get
trapped by the electronica . I can
clearly understand what is saying and I never heard him sound better on a
song.
Lyrics:
Lyrical there isn’t much to it. Chris Martin mainly just repeats the title of
the song. I have nothing against that notion especially with pop songs. Some of
the best songs keep it simple with well meaning lyrics. Take that
as a note songwriters it is better to be concise than wordy. As I learn in
school it is to “keep it simple stupid” (KISS) than be (BULC) “Boring,
Uninteresting, Long, and Confusing."
“Cause
you’re a sky full of stars.
A
sky full of stars.”
In this lyric Chris Martin is comparing his love to
whom I believe is Gwyneth Paltrow to a sky full of stars. I like the line even if it is cheesy, but he has
well meaning intentions ,so I’m not going to give him too much flack for it. You have to
pretty have to like this line for the song as he says it 12 times during the
song. It could be worse he could be comparing his (or your) love to mountain of
landfills, or a collection of toenails.
“I
don’t care
Go
on tear me apart
I
don’t care if you do.”
This line has to refer to his previous relationship with Gwyneth. Here he says go ahead I don’t care
if you break up with me. It won’t
reflect what I think of you as a person.
“Cause
you’re a sky full of stars.
A
sky full of stars.
I
think I saw you.”
Chris Martin sees his love in the night sky similar
to the scene in the Lion King where Simba sees his father. The million dollar
question is will Chris Martin save the jungle from the hyenas?

Chris Martin save the kingdom. Please. |
“Such
a heavenly view”
While Chris Martin still likes this person he can
only appreciate it from a distance similar to seeing a night sky full of stars.
Now this song still has it fair share of Coldplay
trademark lyrics of being vague.
“Cause
you’re lighter
The
more its get dark.”
I’m taking a pass on explaining this lyric. I am going
to use my get out of explaining a Coldplay lyric card.
For a Coldplay song this wasn’t too bad to figure
out the meaning behind it. I need this book on Coldplay lyrics and stop
complaining about it.
Video:
The music video is Chris Martin walking down a sidewalk in one man band outfit
similar to Homer Simpson trying it. To make a game out of it try
to guess the number of cell phones taking pictures or videos of Chris walking
down the street. The video ends with the
band performing on stage together.
Overall final score: (4/5)
Production:
Well done. The upbeat nature of a ballad really fits well with the nature of a
sky full of stars. Avicii did amazing job with the production.
Lyrics:
Pretty good. Still has the Coldplay vagueness sometimes.
Vocals:
Very good. It is the best Coldplay has ever sounded on a pop single.
Video: Ok concept. Though I would like
to see “a sky full of stars” as the title implies.
Here is an awesome picture of "a sky full of auroras."
